START UP ITALIA - Most companies today are startups. This type of enterprise seems to have conquered especially the new generations who for the first time enter the labour market. There are various types of technology to energy, which seem to be fascinated by the Molise region. But what is the general trend of startups in Italy? Let’s find out together.

Let’s start from the beginning: What is meant by startups in Italy?

It is not easy to give a unique definition of start-up, there are many dates from different personalities. Steve Blank, guru of Silicon Valley and considered the top expert of start ups defines them as "a temporary organization in search of a replicable and scalable business model". Eric Ries, a pioneer of the Lean Startup movement, says that a startup is a human institution designed to offer new products or services in conditions of extreme uncertainty. But if not even the top experts know how to agree on a definition how do we know what rules we must apply to give life to a startup in Italy? Simple, let’s see the decree law of 18 October 2012 in which it reads:

"Capital companies, whether or not constituted in a cooperative form, whose shares or units representing the share capital are not listed on a regulated market or on an MTF"

In the collective imagination, startups are newly established companies with huge opportunities for growth.

What is the incidence of startups in Italy?

According to data from the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) since 2012 in Italy were born 12,291 innovative startups of which most in Lombardy and Trentino Alto-Adige. In southern Italy the percentage of spread of startups is 24.2%, with the Molise region to be the master, so as to occupy the third general position, immediately after the two aforementioned regions. Obviously the diffusion rate is calculated considering the distribution of startups for every 100 thousand inhabitants.

Molise and the south also have another record, since the majority of startups with a significant presence of young people under the age of 35 are in Molise, Puglia and Sicily. But the Molise also marks another point with regard to data on startups run by women. In general, only 4.2% is driven by women, with a ratio of the largest total in Basilicata, Sicily and Sicily.
